MOOSE JAW PROGRAMS
Adult Alternative Measures ProgramAlternative Measures refers to means other than formal prosecution of adults charged with less serious offences, and not having a significant record of criminal involvement. The John Howard Society arranges a face to face meeting between the offender and victim. A mediated discussion takes place with the intent of resolving the conflict through a mediation agreement and hopefully deterring the offender from further criminal activity. Upon completion the charge is withdrawn by the courts. Back to TopExtrajudicial Sanctions ProgramExtrajudicial Sanctions are measures other than judicial proceedings used to deal with a young person who has admitted to committing an offence. The focus is on condemning criminal action rather than the offender. The sanctions are meant to be restorative. Some involve the young person and the victim, and some also include the community. The focus is on making the youth accountable for their actions by meeting with the victim to resolve the issue out of the court process. Agreements reached through this process could involve community service hours, restitution to the victim or service work to the victim. The charge is withdrawn upon completion. Back to TopCommunity Justice Forum for Youth and Adults (CJF)This process is based on restorative justice and community healing. A CJF is a safe environment in which an offender, victim and their families along with supporters are brought together under the guidance of a trained John Howard Facilitator. Together, they discuss the offence, how they have all been affected and jointly develop a plan to correct what has occurred. The agreement is reach will be suitable to all parties. Back to TopStoplift ProgramThis is a program offered, by John Howard Society, to young people as an extrajudicial measures under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Stoplift is designed specifically for cases where young people between the ages of 12 and 17 years are charges with theft under $5,000. The primary focus of the program is educational, using a structured group process. The Stoplift Program is a 3 part program. Youth discuss and examine the reasons why people shoplift and develop strategies to cope with peer pressure in hopes of preventing re-offending. William Glasser's Behavior Car (Choice Theory) has been added to the program to teach the young people to utilize their strengths to make better choices. Back to TopFine Option ProgramThe Fine Option Program is a service that the John Howard Society offers as an alternative to paying a fine.
